This is a very real experience for many of my students.
That is why I LOVE using the Adobe Voice application for poetry recitals. The beauty of this app is that it allows the learners to record their poem line-by line. If they don't like their tone or inflection, they can go back and edit the individual line.
Once they are happy with their recording, they add images (good opportunity to teach symbolism) and publish their completed video.
The best part is their excitement in sharing it with their class. There's none of the nervous embarrassment that usually accompanies orals. Everyone wants to share and everyone wants to watch and listen.
Sure, it won't replace the traditional orals and poetry recitals entirely. But it is an awesome opportunity for students to experiment and hear themselves getting it right. It boosts their confidence and they are more willing to recite the poem for the class in person. A win-win in my books!
